OH Chapter 7
Chapter 7: The First Trial of the Guardian
The palace grew quiet.
Tom stood still.
The words of Queen Lara echoed in his mind.
“Because you always are.”
He did not fully understand.
But he felt something change inside him.
“You must begin,” Queen Lara said gently.
“The forest is already calling.”
Qia Janami raised her hand.
A path of light appeared before them.
It led deep into the forest.
“Follow it,” she said.
“But be careful.”
Tom nodded.
“I will.”
Howley Owl flew beside him.
Bella walked close behind.
The light slowly faded as they entered the forest again.
At first, everything seemed normal.
The trees stood tall.
The wind moved softly.
But after a while…
Something felt wrong.
“Howley,” Tom whispered, “do you feel that?”
Howley’s wings tightened.
“Yes,” he said.
“The forest is too quiet.”
Bella stopped walking.
Her ears lifted.
“There should be sounds,” she said.
“Birds. Leaves. Life.”
But there was nothing.
No sound.
No movement.
Tom stepped forward carefully.
The ground beneath him felt cold.
Not like before.
Then he saw it.
A patch of black on the forest floor.
Like a shadow that did not belong.
“What is that?” Tom asked.
Howley flew lower.
He looked closely.
Then pulled back quickly.
“That is not a shadow,” he said.
Bella’s voice grew serious.
“It is spreading.”
The black patch slowly moved.
Like ink in water.
It touched a small plant.
The plant shriveled.
Turned grey.
And fell.
Tom’s eyes widened.
“What is happening?”
A faint whisper passed through the air.
Not like before.
This one was colder.
Empty.
“Stay…” the voice murmured.
Tom froze.
That voice…
It felt wrong.
Far away…
On Sun Island…
Denver Joe suddenly shivered.
He hugged his arms.
“That voice…” he whispered.
“It’s not the same.”
Old Maro watched him carefully.
“Yes,” he said softly.
“You are beginning to hear it.”
Back in Kallivana…
The shadow spread further.
Slow.
Silent.
Hungry.
Howley spoke quickly.
“We must leave.”
But Tom did not move.
His wrist grew warm.
The mark appeared again.
Brighter than before.
The shadow stopped.
As if it noticed him.
Bella stepped in front of Tom.
“Do not go closer,” she said.
But Tom took one step forward.
“I think… it’s watching me,” he said.
The shadow moved slightly.
It pulled back.
Just a little.
Howley gasped softly.
“It fears you.”
Tom looked confused.
“Fears me? Why?”
The whisper came again.
This time clearer.
“Not… finished…”
Tom stepped back quickly.
“What does that mean?”
The shadow slowly sank into the ground.
Disappearing.
But not gone.
Silence returned.
But it was not peaceful.
Bella looked at Tom.
“This is not normal darkness,” she said.
Howley nodded.
“This is something older.”
Tom looked at his wrist.
The mark slowly faded.
Far away…
Denver Joe held his hand tightly.
His mark flickered again.
“What is that thing?” he asked.
Old Maro looked toward the sea.
His face was serious now.
“That,” he said,
“is what the forest has been waiting for.”
The fire crackled.
The children sat very still.
Old Maro continued.
“It has many names.”
He paused.
Then said quietly:
“But we call it…”
“The Shade.”
The wind moved suddenly.
The fire flickered.
“And it has returned.”
