OH Chapter 10

Chapter 10: The Path Beneath the Roots
The forest did not feel the same anymore.
The air was heavier.
The light was weaker.
Tom stood at the edge of the Heart Grove.
He looked ahead.
The trees grew thicker there.
Older.
Darker.
“Howley… Bella…” Tom said softly.
“I think we need to go deeper.”
Howley Owl shifted uneasily.
“That path is not meant for everyone,” he said.
Bella looked ahead, calm but serious.
“But it is meant for him,” she said.
Tom turned.
“What do you mean?”
Bella met his eyes.
“The roots remember more than the trees,” she said.
“And they are calling you.”
Tom looked down.
The ground beneath his feet felt… different.
Warm.
Alive.
Then—
The mark on his wrist flickered.
A soft golden line appeared on the ground.
Thin.
Faint.
But clear.
It moved slowly.
Like it was drawing a path.
Tom took a step forward.
The line moved again.
Guiding him.
Howley sighed.
“I do not like this,” he said.
“But I will not leave you.”
Bella nodded.
“Neither will I.”
They followed the glowing path.
Deeper.
Further than before.
The trees grew taller.
Their roots pushed above the ground.
Twisting.
Turning.
Like giant fingers.
Soon—
The path led them to a place where the roots formed an opening.
A doorway.
Tom stopped.
“This was not here before,” he whispered.
The golden line flowed into the darkness below.
Bella stepped closer.
“This is beneath the forest,” she said.
Howley looked down carefully.
“The oldest part of Kallivana,” he added.
Tom felt a strange pull.
Not fear.
Something else.
“I think… I’ve been here,” he said.
Howley turned sharply.
“That is not possible.”
But Bella did not speak.
Tom stepped forward.
Into the opening.
The moment he entered—
The world above disappeared.
It was quiet below.
Very quiet.
Soft light glowed from the roots.
They stretched in every direction.
Like veins.
Carrying something unseen.
Tom walked slowly.
His hand brushed a root.
And suddenly—
A flash.
He saw something.
A younger version of himself.
Standing here.
Long ago.
Tom pulled his hand back.
“What was that?” he whispered.
The mark on his wrist glowed brighter.
Far away…
On Sun Island…
Denver Joe held his breath.
“I’ve seen this place,” he said.
Old Maro looked at him.
“You are seeing it now,” he replied.
Back beneath the roots—
Tom moved forward again.
The path continued.
At the center—
There was a pool.
Not water.
Not light.
Something in between.
It shimmered.
Like memory.
“Howley…” Tom said slowly.
“Is this the same as the water in the grove?”
Howley shook his head.
“No,” he said.
“This is older.”
Bella stepped beside Tom.
“This is where the forest keeps its truth,” she said.
Tom stared into it.
The surface moved.
Images began to form.
He saw the forest.
Bright.
Alive.
Then—
Darkness spreading.
Faster.
Stronger.
The Shade.
Larger than before.
Tom stepped back.
Then the image changed.
A boy stood in the light.
Holding out his hand.
The mark glowing.
Tom leaned closer.
“That’s me…” he whispered.
But then—
The image shifted.
Another boy appeared.
Different clothes.
Different world.
The same mark.
Far away…
Denver Joe stepped forward.
“No…” he said softly.
Back beneath the roots—
Tom’s voice shook.
“Who is that?”
The pool rippled.
A voice rose from within.
Soft.
Ancient.
“Not who…”
“When…”
Tom’s eyes widened.
“I don’t understand,” he said.
The voice continued.
“You walk the same path…”
“Again.”
The mark burned brighter.
Tom fell to one knee.
Far away…
Denver Joe did the same.
Both of them held their wrist.
At the same time.
The pool shimmered violently.
The images merged.
For a brief moment—
Tom and Joe stood in the same place.
Looking at each other.
Then—
Darkness spread across the pool.
The Shade.
Closer.
Watching.
Its voice echoed.
“Found… you…”
The light flickered.
Bella stepped forward quickly.
“Tom! Step back!” she said.
Howley spread his wings.
“It followed you here!” he cried.
Tom stumbled back.
The mark flared.
Pushing the darkness away.
But not completely.
The pool cracked.
The light dimmed.
The voice faded.
Silence returned.
Tom breathed heavily.
“What was that place?” he asked.
Bella answered slowly.
“The place where truth cannot hide.”
Howley added,
“And where danger cannot be kept away.”
Far away…
Denver Joe looked at Old Maro.
“It saw me,” he said.
Old Maro nodded.
“Yes,” he said.
“And now…”
He looked toward the dark sea.
“It knows where to look.”
The fire flickered.
The wind grew cold.
And deep beneath the forest…
Something had awakened.
