OH Chapter 8

Chapter 8: The Mark That Pushes Back

The forest felt different now.
Heavier.
Darker.
Tom walked slowly between the trees.
Howley Owl flew low beside him. Bella stayed close, her steps quiet but alert.
No one spoke.
After a while, the trees began to change.
Their leaves lost their shine.
Their glow faded.
Some branches looked grey.
Lifeless.
Tom stopped.
“This place…” he said softly.
Bella looked around.
“This is the Heart Grove,” she said.
“It should be full of light.”
Howley turned his head slowly.
“But it’s not,” he said.
A cold wind passed through the trees.
The light flickered.
Then dimmed.
Tom took a step forward.
The ground felt weak.
Like something underneath was fading.
“Stay close,” Bella said.
Suddenly—
The shadows between the trees began to move.
Not like normal shadows.
These shifted.
Slowly.
Watching.
Tom’s heart began to beat faster.
“It’s here,” he whispered.
The darkness gathered.
It pulled together.
Not forming a shape—
But becoming something.
A voice came from within it.
Low.
Echoing.
Empty.
“You… returned…”
Tom froze.
That voice.
Cold.
Heavy.
“How do you know me?” Tom asked.
The shadow moved closer.
Not rushing.
Not attacking.
Just… coming.
“You never left…”
Tom felt something inside him twist.
A strange memory.
A feeling he could not explain.
“Have we met before?” he asked.
The shadow did not answer.
It moved faster.
Sliding across the ground—
Reaching toward him.
“Tom!” Howley shouted.
Bella stepped forward quickly.
But before she could reach him—
The shadow touched him.
And then—
🔥 The mark burned.
A bright golden light burst from Tom’s wrist.
It spread outward.
Strong.
Warm.
Alive.
The shadow pulled back instantly.
As if pushed by force.
Tom gasped.
“What… is this?”
The light grew brighter.
Pushing the darkness away.
Far away…
On Sun Island…
Denver Joe suddenly stood up.
His hand burned.
He grabbed his wrist.
The same mark glowed.
Bright.
“Stop…” Joe whispered.
Back in the grove—
Tom raised his hand without thinking.
The light followed.
Stronger now.
The shadow moved again.
Testing.
Watching.
It touched the edge of the light—
And pulled back sharply.
Howley’s eyes widened.
“It fears you,” he said.
The voice returned.
Softer.
But clearer.
“Stronger… than before…”
Tom shook his head.
“I don’t understand!” he said.
The light flickered.
His breath grew heavy.
The power felt too much.
Bella stepped close.
“Tom! Stay with us!” she said.
“Don’t let it take you!”
Tom closed his eyes.
The light pulsed.
Then steadied.
For one brief moment—
The surface of the shadow changed.
It shimmered.
Tom saw something.
A face.
His face.
Then—
Another face.
Different.
From another world.
Far away…
Denver Joe gasped.
The image vanished.
The shadow pulled back slowly.
Not afraid.
Not gone.
“This time…” it whispered,
“You will break.”
Then it sank into the ground.
Gone.
But not defeated.
Silence returned.
But it was not peaceful.
The trees still stood.
But their light was weak.
Tom fell to one knee.
Breathing hard.
Bella stood beside him.
Howley landed on a branch above.
“What was that?” Tom asked quietly.
Howley spoke first.
“That… is the Shade.”
Tom looked at his wrist.
The mark slowly faded.
“I didn’t do that on purpose,” he said.
Bella nodded.
“That is what worries me,” she said.
Far away…
Denver Joe sat down slowly.
His hand still glowed faintly.
Old Maro watched him.
Calm.
Serious.
“It has seen you now,” Old Maro said.
Denver Joe looked up.
“What does that mean?”
Old Maro looked toward the dark sea.
“It means,” he said quietly,
“the story will not wait any longer.”
The fire crackled.
The wind moved softly.
And somewhere in the darkness…
The Shade waited.
