OH Chapter 9

Chapter 9: The Warning in the Water
The night felt colder.
Tom, Howley Owl, and Bella stayed in the Heart Grove.
No one wanted to move yet.
The trees were still weak.
The air was heavy.
Tom sat near a small pool of water.
It was clear.
Still.
Too still.
He looked at his reflection.
For a moment, it was just him.
A tired boy.
Confused.
Then—
The water moved.
Just a little.
Tom leaned closer.
“Did you see that?” he asked.
Howley flew down beside him.
“The water should not move,” he said.
“There is no wind.”
Bella stepped closer.
“Be careful,” she said.
Tom looked again.
His reflection returned.
Normal.
He took a breath.
Maybe it was nothing.
Then—
The water shimmered.
The reflection changed.
It was still a boy.
But not Tom.
The clothes were different.
The background was different.
Tall buildings.
Lights.
A different world.
Tom pulled back quickly.
“What was that?” he whispered.
Far away…
On Sun Island…
Denver Joe sat near the fire.
His eyes widened.
The firelight flickered.
And for a brief moment—
He saw water.
A forest.
And a boy staring into it.
“That’s…” Joe whispered.
Old Maro watched him closely.
Back in Kallivana…
Tom slowly leaned forward again.
His heart beat faster.
The water changed once more.
Now—
The boy in the reflection looked directly at him.
Tom froze.
The boy’s lips moved.
“Listen…”
Tom could not breathe.
The voice came softly.
From the water.
From somewhere else.
“It remembers…”
Tom shook his head.
“What remembers?” he asked.
The image flickered.
“The forest…”
Far away…
Denver Joe leaned forward.
His hand trembled.
“The forest remembers…” he repeated.
Old Maro nodded slowly.
Back in the grove—
The water rippled harder.
The image shifted.
Now Tom saw something else.
The forest.
But darker.
The trees were gone.
The light had faded.
Everything was grey.
And in the distance—
A shadow.
Larger than before.
Stronger.
Tom stepped back.
“No…” he said.
The voice returned.
Urgent now.
“Not finished…”
The same words.
From the Shade.
Tom looked at his wrist.
The mark flickered.
“How do I stop it?” he asked.
The water calmed slightly.
The boy in the reflection looked at him again.
“You don’t…”
Tom’s eyes widened.
“You remember…”
The image broke.
The water became still again.
Silence.
“How is that possible?” Tom whispered.
Howley spoke slowly.
“Water is a keeper of memory,” he said.
“It shows what has been… and what may come.”
Bella looked at Tom.
“And what must be faced,” she added.
Tom stared at the pool.
“I saw him,” he said.
Howley tilted his head.
“Who?”
Tom hesitated.
“I don’t know,” he said.
“But… he felt like me.”
Far away…
Denver Joe stood up suddenly.
“I saw him too,” he said.
The children looked at him in surprise.
Old Maro smiled faintly.
“The water does not lie,” he said.
Denver Joe turned to him.
“What is happening to me?” he asked.
Old Maro looked into the fire.
“It is not happening to you,” he said.
“It is returning.”
The wind moved through the trees.
The fire flickered.
Back in Kallivana…
Tom stood up slowly.
“I don’t understand any of this,” he said.
Bella stepped beside him.
“You will,” she said.
Howley spread his wings slightly.
“The forest has begun to speak,” he said.
Tom looked at the dark trees ahead.
“And the Shade?” he asked.
Silence.
Then Bella answered.
“It is listening too.”
The wind grew colder.
And somewhere, unseen—
The darkness shifted.
Waiting.
